PERU & BRAZIL ORIGIN TRIP 2024

This week our roastery teams from both @fuglencoffee_tokyo and @fuglencoffee_oslo @yusho_yda @senor_b & @oliverjameshardaker have been in Peru & Brazil visiting our friends at @origin.coffee.lab & @capadocia_coffees

This is our first time to Peru and we are excited to be able to visit our friends and partners in the region; Origin Coffee Lab & Cultivar Coffee.

Oliver and Bjørnar traveled from Oslo, while Yusho made his way from Tokyo. We asked Oliver (one of our coffee roasters & head of QC), for some reflections on his first origin trip, and first time to Peru!

"The whole team at Origin Coffee Lab and Cultivar were fantastic hosts. They showed us around multiple farms they work with while sharing their immense knowledge of all stages in the coffee production chain. Getting to taste the cherries from different varieties was super interesting, there is a huge difference at cherry stage! Seeing the thought behind planting methods and farm layout/management was really insightful along with post harvest processing and different fermentation methods & ideas."

"We were welcomed with open arms by producers and it was amazing being able to spend some time with them and their families. Meeting a few of the producers we have previously worked with in person was especially impactful.

The countryside is absolutely stunning and the coffees we cupped along the way were really varied. We tasted chocolate, nutty rounded regional coffees as well as some super fruity complex bourbon, yellow caturra and geisha micro lots. An amazing first trip to origin and I can’t wait to go back!"

After Peru, Bjørnar and Yusho continued on to Brazil to visit our good friend Augusto Borges at Capadocia Coffees.
Here are a few of Bjørnar's highlights:
- It was great to see Augusto and finally visit him and his coffee farms in Brazil! (Fuglen has been working with Augusto since 2018). It was especially nice to travel with Yusho, our colleague from Fuglen Coffee Roasters Tokyo.

- Augusto is very forward thinking in his approach to coffee and business. He is driven towards people. The relational side of the business is why he stays in the coffee industry. His slogan is: "Café não é só café" aka: "Coffee is not just coffee"

- Yusho & Bjørnar stayed at the guest house on Augusto's processing station for the duration of their time in Brazil and spent the following 2 days traveling around to each of his farms. They are about a 3.5 hour drive from São Paulo.

- Augusto started with just 1 farm he inherited from his parents. He now has 11 farms and has been constantly reinvesting in his projects. He is very innovative and always experimenting with new varieties and production, searching for the best cup quality he can achieve.

- While in Brazil they also visited Jaguara, the exporters of Augusto's coffee. As well as Augusto's lab where he plans to roast his own coffee for the local market.

This year we have doubled the amount of coffee we are buying from Augusto and we are looking forward to growing together with our good friend!
